To discover a more complete history of Camp Merryelande, come visit us and we'll tell you all about it. There are many other interesting historic attractions in St. Mary's County (such as St. Mary's City).

Camp Merryelande was originally a retreat used to accommodate a girls school from Washington, DC run by the Sisters of the Holy Cross.

After it was bought by Seaforth Partnership around 1980, it was rented to long-term tenants until around 1985. During that period, Cottage # 2, about the same size as Cottage # 1, was destroyed by a fire related to a resident's carelessness with the ashes from a barbeque grill. During the 1980's, most of the houses were renovated with the modern conveniences that are available to guests today.

We were closed from 19 September 2003 through 06 October 2003 as we recovered from Hurricane Isabel, that slammed into us and most of the Atlantic coast. The Washington Post featured an article describing our recovery, and one describing our power problems. Thank you for your patience :)
